President Obama Ignited California Flower Mall Petallers 24/7 Mother’s Day Marathon
President Obama ignited California Flower Mall petallers 24/7 Mother’s Day marathon with a larger mission when he admitted his biggest regret was not spending more time with his mother before she died of cancer. The Downtown Los Angeles flower market opens 24/7 — 62 sleepless hours — 4:30 a.m. Friday May 9 through Mother’s Day Sunday 7 p.m. with last minute Mother’s Day flower gifts at wholesale and discount prices.
The President got personal in response to questions from students at the University of Malaya town hall-style forum during his visit to Kuala Lampur, Maylaysia last week. Turning serious Obama said he regretted not spending more time with his mother before she died of cancer.
“What you remember in the end, I think, is the people you love,” Obama said near the conclusion of his 80-minute town hall. “I realized that I didn’t every single day—or at least more often –just spend time with her and find out what she was thinking and what she was doing, because she had been such an important part of my life.”
“Wow, our President spoke from his heart to mine,” said Jose Macias, Sr. owner of Macias Wholesale Flowers at CFM. “ When I remember the mamas I have loved and lost, it reminds me what Dia de Las Madres and Mother’s Day is really about and how important our flowers are to making colorful, loving memories for families,” Macias reflected.
California Flower Mall’s 45 flower wholesalers and distributors serve the floral trade and public 18 hours a day Mother’s Day week and 3 days straight round the clock Dia de Las Madres and Mother’s Day weekend. A CFM survey of flower wholesalers and distributors estimates they will transact up to 40% of their annual dollar volume this Dias de Las Madres and Mother’s Day holiday.
“We expect Mother’s Day week and weekend to be bigger and busier than usual because the Dia de Las Madres and Mother’s Day holidays fall on Saturday and Sunday. That won’t happen again for another 7 years,” said CFM President Mark Chatoff.
Many CFM petallers said they were touched by the President’s admission and inspired to press on though the sleepless hours with a higher purpose in mind.
Alfredo Samaniego, owner of LA Flowers and Design at CFM said, “My floral designs help families celebrate times of great joy and mark times of great sadness together.” He says, “Flowers are a beautiful symbol of how precious life is – their beauty honors the unconditional love mother’s have for their children until their last breath.”
“The President is so clear about it –what you remember in the end is the people you love; not how much you have in the bank or what kind of stuff you own— he helped those of us in the floral industry to focus on how we help people to express their love, and appreciation for mothers and to remember Mother’s Day is not just about the money,” Samaniego concluded.
