Cupid showers Valentine’s roses and flowers 24/7 for Love and Friendship Day at California Flower Mall in Downtown LA’s Flower District; there is no admission charge at the 45 vendor San Pedro Street market. CFM sells hundreds of varieties of farm-freshValentine’s flowers wholesale to the public, up to 70% off of retail prices.

Friday, Feb. 13, is one of the luckiest days of the year in LA’s Flower District. It’s the second busiest flower holiday of the year for petallers at California Flower Mall and LA area residents have a dazzling, discount urban flower marketplace to shop at – on their schedule.

“California Flower Mall is the only flower market in LA’s Flower District open late in the evening Valentine’s week and around the clock from 4:30 a.m. on Friday, February 13, to Saturday, February 14, at 6 p.m., to accommodate our customers’ schedules. Men often push it to the last minute. CFM is here for them morning, noon and night,” says Mark Chatoff, CFM owner and president.

37.8% of Americans plan to give flowers this Valentine’s Day, spending a total of $2.1 billion on blooms, according to a Jan. 26 report by the National Retail Federation.

Men often prefer the wow factor of red long-stem Valentine’s roses to express love for their sweethearts. Rich, premium grade, long-stem red Valentine’s roses imported from Ecuador and Columbia are in high demand and high demand equals higher prices.

Yet evidence shows size really doesn’t matter when it comes to Valentine’s roses for sweethearts, nor does color. There is no need to purchase over the top, six-foot-tall red roses, like the ones Oprah received on her 60th birthday. After red, the second most popular color for roses was pink (27%), followed by mixed colors of roses (16%), yellow (12%), purple/lavender (12%), white (11%), orange (8%), and peach/coral (7%), according to a January 2014 report by the Society of American Florists.

“Men will see just as many smiles with Valentine’s flower gifts of tulips, daisies, and roses in colors other than red,” says Perez Gonzales, owner of Mireya’s Flowers. She suggests these budget tips:

  • Select medium stem roses in bigger bunches
  • Choose flowers in her favorite color
  • Choose a sentimental favorite – your wedding flowers
  • Mix stargazer lilies with red roses for a deliciously fragrant bouquet
  • Buy several flower gifts and ask for a volume discount

Chatoff cautions shoppers to pay attention to the quality of rose products during Valentine’s week, advising that some “small grocery store roses are not bred to bloom —the petals will never open.”

Roses with weak stems, petal nicks or droopy heads indicate an inferior product that may not have been refrigerated during delivery and storage. “During Valentine’s week, illegal flower vendors have been known to sell flowers from an unrefrigerated 18 wheeler on a side street,” he says. “Cheaper isn’t better when flowers die the next day.”

California Flower Mall’s Valentine’s week extended hours are:
Tuesday, February 10 – 4:30 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Wednesday, February 11 – 4:30 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Thursday, February 12 – 4:30 a.m. – 10 p.m.
Friday, February 13 – 4:30 a.m. – all night until Valentine’s Day, Saturday, February 14 at 6 p.m.
